The Argument for Design

Ben Bailey

If a man were walking in a desert and found a watch, automatically he would realize that there had to be a watchmaker.  No one would argue that a car does not have a carmaker, or that a house does not have a house-builder.  However, people will agree that this Earth, and our bodies (our mortal homes) did not have an Ultimate homemaker.  Yet the argument for design demands that earth, and man’s design demand a Designer.

The sun, (our source of light and heat) is estimated to be an astounding 20 million degrees Celsius.  Our Earth is located at just the right distance from the Sun to receive the correct amount of heat and radiation for life, as we know it to remain in existence.  If the Earth were a small percentage closer than what it is right now we would receive too much heat and radiation, and we would be disintegrated.  On the other hand, if we were any further from the sun than we are right now we would receive a lack of radiation and heat, and we would freeze to death.  Is it mere chance that our earth is situated at the exact distance from the Sun for life to continue to exist?  Who in their right mind would say that this just happened by chance over millions of years of evolution?  This one evidence is riddled with design, and therefore; demands a Designer.  “The Heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork.”  (Ps 19:1)

Some evolutionists believe that the Earth and Sun are Eternal, and some believe that they have existed for billions of years.  Neither is scientifically correct.  Scientific evidence proves that the Sun is shrinking at four to five feet per hour.  According to correct calculations, the Sun and Earth (at the maximum) could only be 10 million years old, and most evidence proves that it is just a few thousand years old.  If the date evolutionist hold were true then at one time the Sun would have been so big that it would have been directly on top of the Earth. If this theory is true we would not be here today because the Sun would have melted the Earth.  From the amount the Sun shrinks per hour (4 to 5 feet) multiplied by the amount of time from the creation of the world to know (6000-8000  yrs) you can see that the Maker set the sun in the Universe in exactly the right spot where it would not have been on top of us at one time.  The design, intent, and purpose of the Sun are evident in its distance.  Truly these great evidences cry out to us that there must be a creator.  “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1).

The eye is one of the most complex evidences for creation.  Light enters the eye at approximately 186,000 miles per second through the iris.  The iris is similar to a camera; it lets in the exact amount of light by opening and closing like the diaphragm of a camera.  A lens at the back of the eye then focuses the images.  After the picture is focused it is sent to the brain for processing at an exasperating speed of 300 miles per hour.  The eye has baffled scientist for year.  It has often sent them into a chaotic frenzy searching for impossibilities.  Even Charles Darwin wrote this about the eye:

“To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting differing amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatical aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest sense.”

It is very absurd to speak of the eye as a haphazard chance of Evolution.  Would anyone disagree that the camera was designed?  No!  Then why do people believe that the eye evolved, when the camera was patterned after the eye?  Concerning the eye Dr. Bert Thompson wrote:

“The eye can handle 1.5 million simultaneous messages, and gather 80 percent of all the knowledge absorbed by the brain. . . .  In an average day, the eye moves about 100,000 times, using muscles that milligram for milligram, are among the body’s strongest.  The body would have to walk 50 miles to exercise the leg muscles an equal amount.”

What superb design the eye has!  The fact that you can read this paper, and absorb the focused information is evidence enough for a Designer and Creator.

The Skeletal system is also an amazing proof for design.  On average the adult has about 206 bones in his body.  These bones make up 20 % of the human weight and capacity.  A man weighing 200 lbs. will be at least 40 lbs. of bone.  The human bones serve four major purposes.  (1) They have been designed to hold the body organs and tissues in place.  This is much like the architectural framework and design of a building.  It’s framework supports and strengthens the inside of the building.  In a like manner, the bones of a human support his inner organs. (2) Bones serve as a protective shield to the main organs.  They keep them from being damaged and wounded by punctures or impact.  In this aspect the bones are much like a suit of armor worn by a soldier, this consist of such things as a helmet, breastplate etc....  In a like manner the human bones (skull, chest, and ribs etc..) have been designed to protect its vital organs. (3) The human bones are levers.  When moved about by the muscles they serve a unique purpose.  In this aspect, they could be related to the automatic transmission lever in a car.  When the bones are called upon by the muscles to do a certain duty never fail.  (4) Bones are metabolic, and have a constant rebuilding function.  Bones are constantly being remodeled, and serve as reservoir for essential minerals such as calcium and phosphorus.  If a bone were to break it would immediately begin to rebuild itself, and it would be stronger than it was before it broke.  What mind-boggling design! Can any Engineer create a piece of steel that can rebuild itself?  Truly these evidences of design cry out to us that God is our Creator!!
